Tech VP recommends that football facility be built outside Stadium Woods

Roanoke Times file | Virginia Tech student Erica Largen, a junior studying environmental policy and planning speaks during a rally to name a white oak tree in the Stadium Woods. The athletics department had hoped to build an indoor football practice facility on three acres of the woodland.
In his long-awaited recommendation, Vice President for Administrative Services Sherwood Wilson wrote to Steger that planning and facilities staff should work with the athletic department to look at other locations for the football facility.

Thank you. This is the right thing to do—for the community, for the environment, for the university. I hope Pres. Steger (and I imagine he will since he’s a decent man) will endorse this decision.

The football players and coaches should welcome the opportunity to lose some pounds running up the hill to the eventual practice site, old school style. Of course the coaches will likely ride personal golf carts. The woods location was all about ease and an office view from Jamerson. Congratulations for a victory of substance over a land grab. And make no mistake: national negative press won this victory.
