Contractor studying possibility of widening I-81

A contractor will study the possibility of widening Interstate 81 to eight lanes between Roanoke and Christiansburg, officials said Thursday.

Parsons Transportation Group will conduct a two-year, $500,000 environmental study of the expansion area. Traffic trends, land uses and cultural resources will be part of the accounting, as will the air and noise impacts of highway widening.
