New cadets on the way to dinner march by a statue of Addison Caldwell, who was the first student to attend Virginia Tech. Daniel Lin | The Roanoke Times

One week before the start of the fall semester at Virginia Tech, incoming freshmen in the Corps of Cadets report to campus for New Cadet Week.

Through the course of the week, the incoming cadets spend every free moment studying from a small handbook known as a Guidon, which contains the basic knowledge and expected regulations.

In addition to physical training, cadets are also exposed to many of the programs within the Corps and receive education in various leadership-related topics from both student and staff leaders. The week concludes with the New Cadet Parade on the Drillfield, where freshmen demonstrate their newly acquired marching and rifle skills, and concludes with the new cadets taking the Cadet Oath.
