Modea plan for old BMS site still in play

Posted September 9, 2012

BLACKSBURG – Modea’s plans to develop part of the former Blacksburg Middle School site are likely to be presented next month, town officials said last week.

Blacksburg town staff have been meeting every other week with Modea to keep tabs on a project that initially was described as a $10 million new headquarters facility for the advertising company. The plan has continued despite Modea announcing financial difficulties early this year and laying off about a third of its workforce.

In July, county economic development officials said it probably would be fall before more detailed development plans for the middle school site would be ready.

At a Blacksburg Town Council work session last week, staff said they expect two related rezoning proposals to be submitted soon.

“It sounds like things are starting to move now,” Town Manager Marc Verniel said.

The re-use of the 20-acre middle school site has been discussed for years, and the most recent plans discussed in public involve the Modea headquarters and possibly other offices on part of the site, and development of another section by the partners in the nearby Fiddlers Green residential project. Though Blacksburg controls the zoning at the site, the property itself is owned by the county, which hopes to gain $3.1 million from its sale to put toward the already-underway construction of new schools.
