Blacksburg cancer survivor was known for advocacy

If something needed done — whether fixing the kitchen sink or purchasing a box of Girl Scout cookies or getting grant funding to a breast cancer researcher — Kathleen “Kat” Werner was the person to see.

Werner’s friends, family and colleagues are celebrating the life of the proactive community leader, breast cancer research advocate and mom after her death Sunday. Werner died from a blood clot after giving birth to her fourth child. She was 37.
