Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican George Allen saved some of their sharpest exchanges for the last debate of their U.S. Senate race, sparring over deficit reduction, health care and energy during a televised forum Thursday night at Virginia Tech.
The barbs began at the beginning of the hour-long debate, when Allen said that he wants to be Virginia’s senator and that Kaine “wants to be President Obama’s senator.” And they continued throughout the program, with Kaine repeatedly arguing that Allen’s “no-compromise” approach to governing would impede efforts to reduce the deficit and avert a fiscal train wreck in Congress.
