Tech’s research status climbs
Virginia Tech’s aggressive pursuit of research funding to increase its national status - as well as revenues – has begun to pay off.
According to the latest National Science Foundation ranking of research expenditures, in 2011 Tech rose to 41st in the nation, spending a total of more than $450 million on research sponsored by the university, business and industry and the federal government.
“That’s the highest we’ve ever been,” university spokesman Larry Hincker said Friday.
In 2009, Tech ranked 44th with $396 million in expenditures.
Tech has also outpaced all other Virginia research institutions, according to Hincker.
Detailed NSF data could not immediately be obtained by The Roanoke Times, but according to Hincker, other Virginia institutions ranked 72nd or lower in the survey.
Data on university research is compiled most years by the NSF and released in a rankings format. In 2011, NSF ranked more than research 900 institutions.
