Detour to racetrack doesn’t slow down Giles County man

Wesley Ferrell says he’s going to be a race car driver one day — something he has wanted to be since childhood.

The 18-year-old native of Giles County has been helping out on a pit crew at the Motor Mile Speedway near Radford for more than two years. He missed only one race during the speedway’s most recent season, which ended in September. If it had been up to him, he would have been at that one, too.

Instead, he was in Richmond getting his right leg amputated.
