Governor touts Roanoke, New River Valley transportation plums

Gov. Bob McDonnell says his transportation funding proposal includes $102 million to extend passenger rail service to Roanoke and $47.1 million to replace the Interstate 81 bridge over the New River.

In all, the plan includes about $1.28 billion in new state funding that could be used for 158 highway projects and $1.07 billion in new funds for rail and transit projects, the governor’s office said Tuesday.

  1. It would make sense (but this is Virginia where sense is lacking in politicians) to extend the train to Radford as the terminal point (for now). The train would then tap more easily into the Virginia Tech and Radford University market, in addition to the greater New River Valley. That could make a successful train even more successful that much sooner.
