Canadian company buys Ames Textiles Corp.

Posted January 27, 2013

A Canadian company has bought the former Ames Textiles Corp. yarn plant in Christiansburg with plans to expand the business.

Richard Mercier, co-owner of Quebec-based 3A Throwing Ltd., said he will run the plant as is for now, keeping all 20 employees.

However, plans are in the works for new machines, a more diverse product line and five to 10 additional employees within a year, Mercier said.

The plant, which was opened in 1990 by Ames Textile Corp. of Lowell, Mass., twists yarn for industrial products such as filter fabric, reinforcing fabric and conveyor belt material, Mercier said.

The sale of the property to 3A Throwing closed Nov. 8, according to Montgomery County real estate records. Mercier said a transaction price of $2.4 million listed in the records was more than what his company paid. He declined to give a figure.
