Pulaski County has shelter open tonight

Posted January 31, 2013

Pulaski County authorities have a shelter open at Pulaski County High School for those evacuated from flooded areas.

Here’s the full release from Pulaski County:

Due to the high flood waters, Pulaski County declared a state of local emergency this morning and issued a mandatory evacuation for low-lying areas in the following communities: Parrott, Belspring, Hiwassee, Delton, and Allisonia. A reverse 911 was issued to these communities to advise citizens of the immediate danger and law enforcement and fire department personnel also canvassed these neighborhoods to warn citizens.

The flood waters from the New River have crested and are now beginning to recede. However, the evacuation notice stands as it is still dangerous to return to these areas which may be under water and impassable by vehicles. Many roads will also become dangerous this evening as temperatures drop causing slick, icy areas and debris from the flooded roads will remain.

Pulaski County established a shelter at the Pulaski County High School gymnasium and is being staffed by Red Cross volunteers and Dept. of Social Services personnel. It will remain open all night for those who are in need. If you do need shelter, please bring any medications and other supplies that will make your stay more comfortable. No pets are allowed at the shelter.

The AEP hrydro dams on the New River have been downgraded from a condition B to a C. Engineers have inspected the structures and the dams have been determined to be stable. The Claytor Lake dam is also stable as the lake has dropped to its normal full-pond level.

Although the Pulaski County water plant did lose water production capability for nearly 12 hours, the plant is producing at a normal level, so the county water supply is stable and safe for consumption.

Citizens are asked to call 994-2602 between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm for non-emergency information and to report property damage. Callers can leave a message after hours and the call will be returned.
