Telephone scam targets bank info, police warn
Blacksburg police are warning residents about a telephone scam that targets banking information.
According to a police news release, the callers identify themselves as representatives of Mega Millions Sweepstakes and tell the victims that they are winners.
The callers ask for a certain dollar amount to be paid up-front for insurance to hold the sweepstake prize. The callers then ask for banking account information so that the sweepstakes money can be deposited after the insurance holding money is received, according to the release.
Residents who receive a similar phone call should attempt to obtain the caller’s name and number before notifying police.
