The Best of the New River Valley 2012
For the seventh year in a row, we asked readers to pick The Best of the New River Valley. The votes poured in, nearly 50 percent more than a year ago and more than double the number we had just two years ago. In some cases, we had repeat winners — those are denoted with an asterisk (*).

We had an interesting situation here. We intended this as a place to recognize coaches for rec league teams or travel teams or other teams outside the normal line-up of school sports. Instead, who should get the most votes? Frank Beamer! Perhaps voters figured since he’s not a high school coach, he should qualify here? We decided to resolve the dilemma by recognizing him a “special honoree.” Also of note: That means the winner is with the Roanoke Star soccer club, but it draws players from the New River Valley.

Was Mickey G’s in Floyd given as a choice at the time of this poll? Because they are *fantastic*, always my first choice for a variety of function options.

Why was there only 3 top picks this year when there were 5 last year. Many people use the picks to patron during the year. Others that were picked advertise when they are in the top 5. Lost business for the Roanoke Times. Lost marketing opportunity for the 4th & 5th placement that was removed this year. Who’s decision was this? Why was the change made as it seems a bit strange to change the out come from year to year. Please have someone contact me as it affects numerous people, business and yes even the Roanoke Times.

I would like to know why was there always only one category for Asian? “Asian” could be composed of multiple groups…ie Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese…why is there Italian and Pizza listed? Shouldn’t that be only one category too then? Just something that I was always confused of when it comes to these voting…I think it’s grouped unfairly!

Who votes on these things?

Dj — you do!
The Best of the NRV is an annual readers poll; the voting was open from mid-Feburary through mid-March.
Leona — we customarily have awarded only three places in our other “best of” contests; we thought by limiting the awards to the top three that would make winning more meaningful.

Just like the name change to the Burgs, this poll pretty much leaves out the rest of the NRV. Just because there are fewer people living in other areas of the NRV does not mean we don’t have some of the best it has to offer. There are just more people in the Burgs so our voice gets drowned out.
