Ride of Silence honors bikers hit by cars

Elizabeth Hokanson was riding her bicycle home from work in 2009 when a car hit her. It was going the opposite direction on Main Street in Blacksburg, made a left-hand turn and caused the collision.

Hokanson, a researcher in Virginia Tech’s Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences Department, remembers the hood of the car and a loud noise.

She remembers next coming to her senses in the hospital. She suffered a concussion, cracked ribs, joint damage and other injuries.

“I’m lucky to be here,” she told me last week.

Wednesday evening, she and bicyclists from around the New River Valley will ride in honor of every bicyclist who has been injured in an accident with a vehicle. They will ride, too, for bicyclists who were not as lucky as Hokanson.
