America’s newest young citizens
America’s melting pot was on display at Smithfield Plantation a week ago. Two dozen people became American citizens at the Blacksburg landmark.
On July 4 every year, Monticello hosts a citizenship ceremony. It is a tremendously moving experience that reminds all who attend what makes this nation special.
Smithfield could have its own tradition in the making. Where Monticello’s is for adults, Smithfield’s is for children. This was the second year that the plantation hosted a children’s naturalization ceremony, and organizers hope to make it an annual event.
