Virginia Tech’s HokieSpeed slips
By Christian Trejbal
Most people have felt the sting of technological obsolescence. One buys a new computer, cellphone, tablet or other doodad, and it seems like only days before something with a bigger screen, faster processor and better apps hits the market.
Virginia Tech knows that sting, too. Its “HokieSpeed” computer ranked among the top 100 fastest computers in the world six months ago. It was a powerhouse, a speedy computational behemoth. Now it is like a Commodore 64 with a 300-baud modem in a broadband world.
