Clarify aquatic center costs

The Christiansburg Aquatic Center is a month into its third year of operation. Measured by the ebb of disgruntled residents, the facility has been a success. Complaints have tapered off, and events regularly occur in the pools. An objective comparison of the first two years, on the other hand, is more difficult.

The aquatic center’s grand opening occurred a couple of weeks into the 2010-11 fiscal year. As new staff settled in and adapted to new finance and membership software, they tweaked things as needed. For example, something that initially counted as “program revenue” might have been better classified as “facility revenue” by the end of the year. As a result, most detailed revenue data are incomparable from the first year to the second, which ended June 30.

  1. The comparison to Green Ridge is inappropriate. How many hotel rooms have filled by people visiting Green Ridge? The CAC has attracted thousands of out of town patrons. These people and their families have had a significant economic impact throughout the New River Valley. Is this fact significant?

  2. I’m from Christiansburg, and I was absolutely amazed at how much investment Christiansburg is putting into their pools. I remember the first rec center, in an old white house near Frankin Street. You’ve come a long way, C-burg. Keep heading in the right direction.
