New River Valley could win its jail gambit
It’s about time someone turned the tables on the state. Lawmakers and the governor for the last few years have shifted costs onto localities while reducing state funding. It was almost certainly with some small amount of devious pleasure, then, that several New River Valley communities said enough is enough.
Eight regional localities — the city of Radford and the counties of Pulaski, Giles, Carroll, Wythe, Grayson, Bland and Floyd — are partners in the New River Valley Regional Jail authority. Their jail in Dublin houses local miscreants as well as some state and even federal prisoners. The trick is in who pays for the costs of incarceration.
