A lot of people are learning to cut back and live without all of the luxury's that the new schools offer the children. There are a lot of senior citizens paying for these items that they have already paid for in the past with their children.
Mr. Selcovitz: When you have the teachers start paying for the health
insurance, etc., would you please tell me where the teachers will get the
money to buy underwear, and wintercoats, and shoes, and backpacks, and
mittens, and classroom supplies for their students. Yes, some schools have
a little money for students who come to school without a coat on a fierce
winter day, but it is never enough when there are several hundred students
in a school. Not all students live in the wealthier subdivisions of
Blacksburg or Christiansburg. Many live in mobile homes that are never
warm, have parents in and out of jail, come home and find their belongings
on the sidewalks because their family was evicted, etc. These are not rare
situations, and it is the teachers who step up and open their own pocket
books to help as they can. You have absolutely no idea!
