BLACKSBURG – It’s been almost two years since Blacksburg High School’s gym collapsed, leaving many students with what seems to be an abnormal high school experience.
On Friday, BHS students took another step toward “normalcy,” when the school held its first pep rally since before the gym collapsed in February 2010.
Students were treated to dances and cheers from BHS cheerleaders, music from the drum line and games. Many students, and some teachers, participated in games like a dizzy bat race, a dance contest and throwing pies at cheerleaders.
The sports marketing class, along with teachers Kim Radford and Amy Stevens, planned the event for students. According to Stevens, the pep rally took about two months to plan.
“Everything went great,” Stevens said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”
Stevens believes BHS students, faculty and staff enjoyed the pep rally, and that many of them told her they can’t wait for another pep rally.
In the week leading up to the pep rally, BHS held a “spirit week” which had students dress in different themes each day. Students wore tacky clothing on Monday, 70s attire Tuesday, patriotic colors Wednesday, neon colors Thursday and school colors on Friday.
Stevens also said the school held a door-decorating competition to honor both the academic and athletic teams at BHS. A total of 35 doors throughout the school had been decorated.
“My favorite part was having the entire student body in one place, cheering our Bruin academic and athletic teams on,” Stevens said. “We had a great time and it is good to be all together with the same common goal.”
