Eastern Montgomery student hangs art in Richmond
Most artists dream about having their work prominently hung within the sight of important people such as government officials.
Fifth-grade artist Garret East has already achieved this.
The Eastern Montgomery Elementary School student was invited Jan. 26 to Richmond, along with four other students, to be honored for winning Del. Greg Habeeb’s 2011 ”Back to School Art Context. “
While simply winning the contest was an honor, East said he was most excited about his work being displayed on the wall outside the delegate’s office in the General Assemble building.
“It feels really good that people that you see on TV all the time get to see it all the time,” East said. “It’s really cool that they get to see my artwork.”
East said he created his piece as a project in his school’s art class, in which his teacher Laura Graham asked the students to create collages in the shape of Virginia using magazine clippings.
The project took place in October and East admitted that until being notified he’d won in December, he’d forgotten all about it.
“It was really cool because I got a letter in the mail. Just a random letter that said ‘Hey, come to Richmond,’” East said.
Graham said she was surprised East had won because only five winners were selected from schools across the 8th district, but that East has always been a gifted art student.
“He is a very talented kid,” Graham said. “From the first day I met him, I could tell there was a lot art talent there.”
Graham said East’s work particularly stood out because of the natural colors and tones of the magazine clippings he choose.
While those features surely helped, East said Habeeb told him there were other aspects he personally enjoyed most.
“He liked mine because it had cowboy, and it said ‘Virginia Rocks,’” East said.
East said he plans to continue to pursue art and even has some thoughts on where he might like to next display his work.
“It would be cool to have some stuff hung up at Virginia Tech,” East said.
