Blacksburg High School marketing students are gearing up to take the international stage with DECA, a global student-focused organization specializing in marketing education. The students compete in a number of events, including role-plays and written manuals. Students placing in the top levels at the State Leadership Conference will represent BHS at the International Career Development Conference slated for April 27 – May 1, 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This year, eleven Blacksburg High School students qualified for the national competition by winning at the state level in individual, team and written events. Additionally, the school-based enterprise, The Bear Necessities, achieved Gold Level Recertification, the highest level of achievement through National DECA. The store manager will be presenting operational and promotion strategies in Salt Lake City. The students are responsible for raising the $1,500 cost of the trip. “We are so proud of our students. This opportunity to compete against over 13,000 students from across the nation allows them to put their classroom and work-based knowledge into action,” says BHS DECA Advisor Kim Radford. “However, we are challenged this year to raise over $15,000 in about three weeks.”

To help defray these costs, community sponsorships are being accepted. Contributions levels are bronze for $100 or less; silver for $150 – $199; gold for $200-299; and platinum for $300+.

Sponsors will be recognized via press release when the students return from competition. Checks can be made payable to: BHS DECA, c/o Kim Radford, Advisor, 3109 Price’s Fork Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060. BHS DECA is a co-curricular marketing organization with more than 140 student members.
