Blue Ridge Writing Project’s Invitational Summer Institute for teachers is July 2-27 at Virginia Tech

Posted April 27, 2012

The Blue Ridge Writing Project is a nationally affiliated organization committed to improving writing and learning in Southwest Virginia schools from kindergarten through university classrooms. The Invitational Summer Institute takes place on the Virginia Tech campus, and helps (along with school districts) with funding for teachers to participate. The dates for 2012 will be July 2-27.

Since its return in 2009, the Blue Ridge Writing Project has selected about 30 kindergarten through university teachers from Southwest Virginia to join the Invitational Summer Institute, a four week, six credit-hour, life-changing experience that is focused on teachers as writers, researchers, readers, and leaders. It is an opportunity to spend time on one’s own work and getting reacquainted with being a writer, something many teachers have moved away from in their struggle to grade hundreds of papers and prepare students for state testing.

We offer teachers the opportunity to become leaders in their schools and districts, to become writing specialists who pass on techniques and ideas to other teachers and of course to students. We can offer schools interactive, engaging workshops and professional development series for faculty on a number of topics.

We offer children a week-long writing and digital media summer camp, called All Write @ Virginia Tech (June 18-22, 2012) that will challenge them in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, film writing, songwriting, filmmaking, digital narratives, application writing, and many more creative pursuits. Register by visiting http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/awvt/.

We also will be offering writing retreats for grown-ups (not just teachers) later in 2012. We hope that teachers, students, interested writers, and school districts will join us for a great year of writing, creating, teacher development, school partnerships, and changing lives through writing!
