Susie Weaver of Auburn Middle School named 2012 MCPS Teacher of the Year

Susie Weaver, guidance counselor at Auburn Middle School, was announced as the Montgomery County Public Schools 2012 Teacher of the Year on May 2. Weaver began her career in MCPS in 1984 as a middle school English and math teacher at Christiansburg Middle School. She has served as a school counselor at Shawsville Middle, Auburn Elementary, Christiansburg Middle and now serves at Auburn Middle.
“Susie has a passion for students that shows in her long-lasting relationships with students and their trust in her guidance,” said Guylene Wood-Setzer, Auburn Middle School principal. “She is a dedicated and effective school counselor who is fully involved in all aspects of our school building.”
Weaver was selected from a field of 20 other school teachers of the year. She will now move on to the Regional Teacher of the Year competition.
“Susie exemplifies everything we look for in the division teacher of the year – caring, compassionate and student-centered,” said Brenda Blackburn, division superintendent. “She is a shining example of the quality educators that we are privileged to have throughout Montgomery County.”
Weaver’s activities at Auburn Middle include crisis prevention training, bully prevention training, job shadowing coordinator for eighth-grade students, and chairperson for the new teacher mentoring program at the school. Weaver also sponsors several school clubs at Auburn. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary and Middle Education from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in Counselor Education from Radford University.
