New River Valley students attend Girls State at Longwood University
More than 600 elite rising high school students attended the 38th annual Girls State held at Longwood University June 10-16. Styled as an immersion into American government, delegates run their own cities and create their own executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. Guest speakers include Gov. Bob McDonnell, Lt. Gov. William T. Bolling, Justice of the Supreme Court and former Attorney General Honorable William C. Mims, New York Times best-selling and award-winning author Nancy Redd, and U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs’ Under Secretary for Benefits Allison Hickey.
Among those in attendance this year were:

- Paige Crane of Blacksburg, Blacksburg High School
- Emily Crane of Blacksburg, Blacksburg High School

- Jessica Vishneski of Elliston, Eastern Montgomery High School
- Sarah Obenshain of New Castle, Craig County High School
- Bridgett Oliver of New Castle, Craig County High School
Longwood is a public university of about 5,000 students located in Farmville, Va.
