The Pulaski County High School Theatre Arts Department won second place in the Region IV competition at Magna Vista High School on Nov. 17 and has advanced to the VHSL Group AA State One Act Festival at Monticello High School in Charlottesville Monday.

Previously the group took first-place honors at the River Ridge District One Act Festival on Nov. 3, with individual acting awards going to Jonathan Holcomb and Jacob Browning, and an honorable mention acting award going to Courtney Ratcliff.

According to Pulaski County High School drama teacher Jeff McCoy, the group’s play “Ellis Island: Through the Golden Door” is based on Peter Morton Coan’s book, “Ellis Island Interview.”

“He gave us permission to write a one act based on real people whom he interviewed about their experiences coming to America,” McCoy said in an email.

“The play was originally written in 1999 by two of my students, Jayson Grimes and Eric Southern, along with myself,” he said.

McCoy added that for this incarnation of the performance, many changes were made, along with new blocking.

The play includes performances from eight male cast members and twelve female cast members, with four students working technical aspects of the show.
