Three Blacksburg High School boys’ basketball players, along with members of the school’s student body, honored the life of Doug Day Sr. at a home basketball game Dec. 14.

Day died in November after a three-year fight with colon cancer.

Students Brandon Walters, Chanceler Henderson and Grayson Shelton designed and marketed T-shirts to raise money to help in Day’s battle with cancer.

The shirts read “Play 4 Day” on the front and include a quote from the French philosopher Moliere on the back:

“The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.”

The student-athletes presented Betty Day with a plaque honoring her late husband and announced that a total of $1,350 was raised. Day Sr. wanted the money to go to the Bruins Family Fund, which assists BHS students, facultyand staff in times of need.

Day had served as the team’s assistant coach for his son, Doug Day Jr.
