The Radford High School Foundation Inc. has recently awarded $13,473 to Radford City Schools as part of their 2012 annual Fall Cash Grants and Awards program.

The RHS Foundation has continued the practice of awarding cash grants to Radford High, John N. Dalton Intermediate, Belle Heth Elementary, and McHarg Elementary schools since 1992 from the foundation’s “Campaign for Continued Excellence.”

Teachers in the Radford schools system are offered the opportunity to submit single applications for cash grants to be used for innovative ideas and classroom projects. In addition to these classroom grants, the foundation also awarded funds from the Carilion Health & Wellness Fund, Morris and Helen Lepchitz Memorial Fund, Bill Goodykoontz Memorial Fund, and the newly established Marge and Robbie Roberson Memorial Fund.

The foundation currently operates 22 separately named funds. The RHS Foundation has awarded more than $376,000 in classroom grants and scholarships since its formation in 1986, including $32,623 in the fiscal 2012 year alone. Grant applications are reviewed by the foundation’s Cash Grants Review Committee in November, announcing winners in December.

“The foundation is excited to be in the position of awarding these grants, especially in a weak economy. I know our school administrators and teachers are appreciative of the RHS Foundation’s efforts over the last 25 years to support our successful school system,” said Chairman Abie Williams. “I think the board’s decision early in our existence to endow most of our funds to make it possible to provide annual cash grants and scholarships in perpetuity was a smart move. I am really proud of our volunteer foundation board and the many friends who have continued to help us with fundraising and achieving our motto and goal: The future is purchased by the present.

“We have been fortunate to have had continuity within the board of directors. Mandy Martin has served as treasurer, and Dr. John Semones has served as a director since they were both appointed in 1986. Dr. Michael Wright has served on the board in his capacity as Radford City Schools administrator, and following his retirement, continues on the board as a civilian director. Other directors are Chip Craig, Bev Davis, Ruth Clark, Frances Hunter, Greg Ridpath, Ed Weyer, Palma Clark, Jeff Smith, Chuck Eaton, and Dr. Becky Greer.”

Currently serving on the 2012 Cash Grants Review Committee are Smith, principal of Radford High School, and Wright; retired teachers from each school — Palma Clark and Sylvia Lloyd (Dalton), Jerry Osborne (RHS), Jean Umberger (McHarg), and Joann Mannon (Belle Heth); two Radford High students — Matt Turk and Emma Duncan; and Abie Williams, ex officio, foundation chairman.
