After five seasons as an assistant at Virginia Tech, James Johnson is at the helm of a men's college basketball team for the first time. | Matt Gentry, The Roanoke Times

James Johnson, who assumed the reins of the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team Tuesday, is a head-coaching novice who will be facing many new challenges.

It is a situation that Jeff Jones, Mike Jones, Steve Prohm and Bill Courtney know well.
