Three more Blacksburg students sign letters of intent

Three more Blacksburg High School seniors “made it official” on Sunday by signing their letters of intent to play collegiate athletics.

The student-athletes were honored with a signing ceremony during the Senior Athlete Recognition Program. The program was sponsored by the BHS Booster Club and recognized senior student-athletes that have committed to participate in collegiate athletics throughout the past school year.

Blacksburg student-athlete Ben Fraley signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Bluefield State, Zach Phelps signed to swim at Queens College and Kate Buss intends to run cross country at Brown University.

Outstanding Male and Female Athlete awards were also presented.

Blacksburg High soccer student-athlete Michael Mecham was awarded the Outstanding Male Athlete award by the Blacksburg Sports Club and track student-athlete Hannah Brown was awarded the Outstanding Female Athlete award by the Blacksburg Women’s Club.
Virginia Tech fullback and BHS graduate Joey Phillips spoke during the inaugural program.

Fraley, Phelps and Buss join 15 other BHS student-athletes who have already committed to colleges across the country:

Hannah Brown – Stanford (scholarship) – Track
Ross Dove – Roanoke College – Track
Lindsey Horton – George Mason (invited walk on) – Pole Vault
Lauren Jaeger – Virginia Tech (invited walk on) – XC and Track
Abby Pennington – Catawba (scholarship) – Volleyball
Morgan McCoy – Virginia Tech (invited walk on) – Softball
Melanie Via – Liberty (scholarship) – Lacrosse
Michael Mecham – UNC Wilmington (scholarship) – Soccer
Tyler Carbaugh – Roanoke College – Soccer
Dionys Beck – Roanoke College – Soccer
Cole Sinclair – Roanoke College – Soccer
Sam Bernhard – Oberlin College – Soccer
Devon Brodkin – Emory & Henry – Soccer
Eli Betz – Radford University (invited walk on) – Soccer
Lauren Frizzell – Emory & Henry – Swimming
