Posted September 8, 2012

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Shannon Mayrose scored in the eighth minute and Virginia Tech’s 11th-ranked women’s soccer team held on to beat Illinois 1-0 on Friday at the Wake Forest tournament.

The win improved the Hokies to 7-0, which is the best start in program history. The seven straight wins also equals the team’s longest winning streak, which came in 2009.

“It was a good match for us today,” Tech coach Chugger Adair said. “Illinois is a very good team and we knew they were going to test us today. We were able to control most of the tempo and it was good to get the early goal.”

The Hokies play UMass at 11:3-0 a.m Sunday to conclude play at the Wake tourney.

Conference play begins next Sunday, when North Carolina State visits Tech.

Dayle Colpitts made three saves for the Hokies, who outshot Illinois (3-2-1) 14-7.
