Hokies’ defense mortified by effort

Tech defense coordinator Bud Foster, speaking about the Hokies' secondary said: "We just don't have much depth back there." | The Roanoke Times, File April
Virginia Tech defensive line coach Charley Wiles sensed it in warmups.
His players weren’t in the proper frame of mind to play, unfocused and a little lackadaisical, despite what the coaches told them about Pittsburgh all week.
“I was like, ‘Hey, we’re getting ready to get our butt beat,’” Wiles said. “‘We’ve got a one-time shot to play. There ain’t no do-overs.’ And then, boom. We got beat.”
The Hokies defense had as uncharacteristic of a performance as a Bud Foster-coached group has had at Virginia Tech last Saturday, giving up 537 yards in a 35-17 loss at Pittsburgh.
