First-year Virginia Tech head basketball coach James Johnson is getting ready for the coming season. Virginia Tech begins practice today. | Matt Gentry, The Roanoke Times

James Johnson entered Ferrum College as a basketball player.

He left as a coach.

Johnson, who was hired last spring as the Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach, didn’t play basketball in the big-time Atlantic Coast Conference like the Hokies do. He played in the nonscholarship world of NCAA Division III.
