BLACKSBURG – With his mother by his side, Blacksburg High School senior Ryan Mondy was grinning ear-to-ear as he signed a national letter-of-intent to play collegiate golf at Virginia Tech.
Mondy had plenty of options and faced a big decision leading up to the signing Wednesday.
The 2012 AA State Golf Champion had visited schools like Ohio State, UVa, Maryland and James Madison, just to name a few. Mondy narrowed down his choices to Tech, Ohio State and UVa.
“I grew up a Tech fan and when I got the opportunity to play for them, it was just too good to pass up,” Mondy said. “I’ve always looked up to those athletes and to be a part of that would be awesome.”
Mondy said several factors led to his decision to become a Hokie including being close to home, familiarity with Tech’s campus and having several friends at the school and on the team.
Blacksburg High School golf coach Rick Mattox believes Mondy will be successful at Tech because of the leadership he brought to his high school team over the past few seasons along with his style of play.
“He has the tenacity of a champion and when the pressure is on, he plays very well,” Mattox said.
The thought of playing in the ACC excites Mondy and the senior has high hopes for his future with the Hokies.
“The ACC is one of the best golf conferences in the country,” Mondy said.
“I’d like to make All-ACC and eventually I’d like to make a living playing the game.”
