Stuarts Draft beats Giles in fifth game nail-biter

Conventional high school volleyball coaching wisdom holds that the first team to reach eight points in a decisive fifth game wins the match 75 percent of the time.

The percentages were in Stuarts Draft’s favor Friday. Giles must not have been aware of the math.

After the Cougars reached eight, the match went down to the last point. The Spartans’ Alex Pennington went just wide on a hard right-to-left cross-court spike as the Cougars pulled out the 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26, 15-13 spine-tingler of a state Group A Division 2 semifinal Friday afternoon.
