NRU U13 Boys Premier team wins CASL Shootout championship
The New River United U13 Boys Premier team competed in the CASL Shootout in Raleigh, N.C., on Nov. 9-10.
The tournament, hosted by Capital Area Soccer League, is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country, selecting the top U11-U14 boys teams around the region and country.
The NRU team played three games in group stage, all against top teams from throughout North Carolina. The boys won their opening match 3-1 against Johnston United SC, which is a top club from Johnston County, N.C. Their second match was against Triangle United SA Juniors, which ended up being one of the best teams they played all season. The NRU boys lost this game 5-1. The third game in group stage was a pivotal one as they had to win this game by a good margin to advance to the final. In their way was Triangle FC from the Raleigh area, and the NRU boys won the match handedly 5-1. The boys advanced to the final, where they faced a rematch against Triangle United SA Juniors. The team was happy to have an opportunity at revenge but knew they had a tough task ahead of them. With some slight tactical changes and a couple of lineup adjustments, the boys proved they were up to the task and upset their foe in penalty kicks, and claimed the CASL Shootout championship.
