5th Annual Austin Cloyd Basketball Tournament Dec. 27-29

Posted December 20, 2012

Blacksburg High School will host the 5th Annual Austin Cloyd Memorial Basketball Tournament from Dec. 27-29. Shelor Motor Mile, National Bank and the BHS Booster Club are co-sponsoring the event.

Other business partners include Virginia Tech Recreational Sports, Substation II, Frosty Parrot and Blacksburg Physical Therapy.

The tournament will be played in honor of Austin Cloyd, a former BHS girls basketball player, who lost her life during the April 16 shooting at Tech. All tournament proceeds will be donated to a scholarship fund in honor of Cloyd.

As in the past, this year’s tournament will include a service project component.

Each team participating in the tournament has been encouraged to complete service projects in their own communities and display information about those projects at the tournament gate.

Some schools have already completed their service project including the Christiansburg High School girls basketball team which has collected two pickup truckloads of nonperishable food items for the Bridge Church food drive.

Seniors from each team can apply for the tournament’s Service Award, a $250 grant to help cover the costs of higher education. The award recipients must demonstrate a commitment to their school, their team and their community.

BHS Advanced Sports Marketing students have been responsible for marketing, sponsorship and event management for the tournament.
