Tech’s Green leads nation in scoring
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh guard C.J. McCollum, a preseason All-American who had been leading the nation in scoring, will be sidelined eight to 10 weeks because of a broken left foot.
McCollum, who has been projected to be taken in the first round of the NBA draft this year, was injured Saturday with 5:37 left in the first half of a loss at VCU and did not return to the game. He scored just four points, 21.7 points below his average entering the game.
Virginia Tech’s Erick Green has moved into the national scoring lead with an average of 24.6 points. McCollum has dropped to second at 23.9 points, with Creighton’s Doug McDermott third at 23.1 points.
Players must play in 75 percent of their team’s games to be eligible for that category, so McCollum will eventually fall out of the rankings while sidelined.
Lehigh is hopeful McCollum could return for the final game of the regular season or for the Patriot League tournament.
McCollum was fifth nationally in scoring last season and had 30 points in Lehigh’s upset victory over Duke in the NCAA tournament.
