Area athletes sign letters-of-intent

Thousands of athletes across the United States signed letters-of-intent Wednesday as part of National Signing Day.
In Christiansburg, high school midfielder Hannah Duff signed to play women’s soccer at Radford University. Duff was a 2012 second-team All-Timesland selection, earning second-team All-Region honors in 2012 and 2011 and first-team All-District honors each of her years playing at the varsity level.
In Pulaski, James King signed to play football for VMI. King was a first-team All-Timesland choice at defensive end in 2012.
In Blacksburg, eight athletes signed letters-of-intent.
Geinda Smith accepted a full soccer scholarship to Colgate University. Smith has received numerous honors during his career in the River Ridge District, Region IV, and was a second-team All-State honoree during his sophomore season.
Garland Smith will become a member of the Radford University Highlanders soccer program after accepting a partial soccer scholarship. Smith has also earned numerous River Ridge District and Region IV honors.
Mitchell Williams accepted a roster spot on the men’s soccer team, along with academic scholarships, at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Williams has earned multiple River Ridge District honors and a Region IV honor.
Kim Shaver accepted a partial scholarship to UNC Greensboro to play soccer. Shaver received a second-team All-State honor and recorded eight goals during the 2012 season.
Morgan Evans will continue her education and soccer career at Temple University. Evans has earned second-team All-Region and second-team All-District honors during her career.
Nick Link will be attending North Carolina State University on a cross country and track scholarship. Link is the 2012 Virginia AA state cross country champion and Nike Nationals All-American.
Matthew Paiser accepted a partial scholarship to run cross country and indoor and outdoor track at VMI. Paiser has competed at cross country states all four years of high school and finished third last year at the Virginia AA state championships.
Blacksburg High’s final signee, Luke Phillips, also accepted a roster spot at VMI to run cross country and indoor and outdoor track. Phillips has been a member of the school’s cross country and track team for three years and was a special contributor to the three-time cross country state AA championship team.
