Five Movies That...Are Prom-Related

Amy Friedman | Patrick Henry High School

High school couples eagerly await their prom the same way a older couples await their wedding day.

At least Hollywood certainly sees it that way. For years, cutesy teen movies have climaxed during a high school dance.

This phenomenon either causes people to want to avoid prom completely, or to look forward to it with every fiber of their soul.

In honor of prom season, here are my top five prom-related movies:

5. “Footloose:” One day Ren, a reckless big city fellow, comes to a small, country town where dancing leads to sex and is forbidden. He stirs things up and brings back dancing. Oh come on! Don’t pretend like you don’t know the story.

4. “Pretty in Pink:” A classic rags-to-riches tale about a poor girl named Andie who falls for rich guy Blaine. But Andie’s best friend Duckie is madly in love with her and everyone knows. I’ll try not to give too much away, but personally, the end infuriates me to my very core, and I always stop it before … well, before the true end. Maybe after watching it you’ll know what I mean. ANDIE AND DUCKIE FOR LIFE!!!

3. “10 Things I Hate About You:” How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways. You know, no one writes a teen flick like Shakespeare. This modern turn on “Taming of The Shrew,” is about sisters Bianca and Kat. Bianca is beautiful and wants to date, but can’t until her sister Kat does. Kat doesn’t date — she has no interest in the “unwashed miscreants” that go to her school. But when Cameron, the new kid, falls for Bianca, he is willing to do anything to take her to the school dance — even enlisting the help of someone, well, terrifying, to tame the shrew.

2. “Drive Me Crazy:” Ah, the love between two ex-best friends. Is there anyway this won’t work out perfectly? Preppy, Ms. School Spirit Nicole wants the quarterback. Her scruffy ex-best friend neighbor, Chase, wants his … um, unique girlfriend back. So they pair up, determined for jealousy to help make their dreams a reality. Yeah, they don’t fall in love at all.

1. “Whatever It Takes:” This one is not as famous as the others, but it just might be the best. Ryan is in love with the most popular girl in school, who doesn’t know that he’s alive. So he enlists the scummy talents of Chris, who wants to pump and dump Ryan’s best friend, Maggie. Needless to say, when Ryan agrees to this deal, things between all four of these students are less than fine by the time prom rolls around.
