On the Edge: Giving Blood
By Julia Rogan, Patrick Henry High School
What if a needle could save someone’s life? It can.
On my 16th birthday, I went to the American Red Cross because I was finally old enough to give blood. And I wanted to do it.
My grandfather was really sick and hospitalized in 2007. Thanks to blood transfusion that he was given during his treatment, he was able to stay alive long enough for me and my family to say our goodbyes. I was really thankful for that.
I know some people don’t feel great after giving blood. But often, the nurses treat you well.
When I first gave blood, the employees at the Red Cross were so nice. They had a light board that said “Happy 16th Birthday Julia.” They were even nice enough to get me a cake and put a picture of me and my family in their newsletter.
A person doesn’t have to be a fireman or policeman to save lives. Donating a little blood helps.
