Christmas is known by many to be the holiday of giving. Friends and families come together to exchange gifts, eat lots of food, and enjoy one another’s company. For those who are less fortunate, there are many hardworking charities in the Roanoke area dedicated to making sure everyone has a warm and happy Christmas.
Toys for Tots is a charity that gives new toys to children in need. A drop box is conveniently located at Toys R Us, where buying the toy and donating is easy. Another great organization is the Angel Tree, a gift-giving group in which many local stores and clubs participate. The angel tells the gender, age, name, and wish list of a less fortunate child for whom people may buy gifts.
The Salvation Army accepts money donations to help support people in various situations, such as the homeless and people unable to receive an education.
There are many ways to help furry friends without homes. For a dollar or less, a dog or cat can be fed for a whole day. There are drop boxes in chain stores like Petco and PetSmart that accept spare change and dollar bills to help feed homeless animals.
Nature’s Emporium, a locally owned pet store in Roanoke, is accepting toy and food donations that will help animals who are in dire need of it. They also take gently used animal toys and bags of food, or just a few coins if anyone has them to spare.
Angels of Assisi, a local animal shelter and hospital, accepts online donations year round. The shelter’s motto is, “Dedicated to the preservation of life for all animals.”
Angels of Assisi is a no-kill shelter, so there are no dues for the animals in their care have to be put down. They’ve given over 75,000 low cost spay and neuter surgeries and adopted out over 5,000 animals to new and loving homes with the help of donations and a dedicated staff.
Holidays are all about giving and receiving. So give a little, or a lot, to these charities to help people and animals who need it.
