Some Knightly Fun

Jia Zheng | Cave Spring High School
Laura Weeks | Cave Spring High School

It was that time of year again for Cave Spring High School. The Knights just recently enjoyed their annual Spirit Week and Homecoming events over the past few days. There are a few foreign exchange students this year who are experiencing Homecoming for their first time at Cave Spring. Marvin Struefing, a senior exchange student from Germany, described Homecoming as “crazy.” He was looking forward to going to the dance with his date, Catey Robbins. It was very different for him, but he was enjoying every bit of the Cave Spring atmosphere.

Spirit Week started off with College Day on September 25th, where students could dress up or wear attire from their favorite college. A contest was held every morning of the week for a group of teachers to pick out the best outfit of anyone who was brave enough to show off his costume.

Twin Tuesday was up next, and the school was filled with matching outfits and hairstyles.

Wednesday was Hip Hop Day, bringing out the inner R&B and rap style in everybody.

Cowboys and cowgirls walked through the school halls Thursday, as people were dressed up for Western Day. A nice little cookout wrapped up the day with friends mingling and having great food together.

It was finally Friday; the school was decorated with blinking lights, signs across the walls and doors, and balloons everywhere. But the best part was the senior theme, “Lions, tigers, and seniors, oh my!” with these students dressed up as if they came out from George of the Jungle. Hours seemed longer and longer as everyone was getting ready for the big homecoming parade and game.

The parade was a huge success and brought smiles to many faces, young and old. Unfortunately, Cave Spring lost its game, but this certainly did not bring down the energy level for the homecoming dance.

Everything had been built up for this one night – choosing the perfect dress, finding a date at the last minute, and enjoying a dinner with a few friends. The combination of these three things can equal none other than Homecoming.

Cave Spring held its Homecoming Dance on Saturday, September 30th. Despite its earlier-than-usual date, the Knights still managed to party ‘til dawn, only stopping for a quick drink and a cookie or two. Then it was back into the gym to dance, dance, and dance some more.

The music echoed that of K92 – plus the fast-paced rhythm of a Spice Girls song. The dresses came in all shapes, colors, and lengths, and the dancing was just as varied. Everyone carried with him a different style, and that’s exactly what made it all work together.

The evening quickly rolled on, and before we were ready to call it a night, the DJ announced the last song. Within the span of four hours, the Knights had turned an other-wise same ol’, same ol’ Saturday night into one that was unforgettable. So, “Here’s to the Knight!”

Portion Size Me

Laura Conte | Patrick Henry High School

So I, Laura Conte, being of sound mind and slightly chubby body, have decided to take on for a whole week eating a strict diet of correct portion size. Yup, what have I gotten myself into?
The country is known for having an overweight population, eating a much larger portion size than prescribed on the back of the Triscuit ® box (or the Chips Ahoy box if you relate better to that). For example, did you know that a single serving size of plain Triscuit ® crackers is 7 crackers with 120 calories, with an average of 12 servings per box. Or that the serving size of a Chips Ahoy chocolate chip box is 3 cookies with 160 calories per serving, and an average of 14 servings per container of cookies.

If you have ever seen that crazy controversial movie called “Super Size Me”, well, this whole experiment has been dubbed “Portion Size Me”. I actually kinda like that title, it is cheesy but appropriate.

So, anyway, here is a really brief beginning to this controlled endeavor. I am a swimmer generally all year round, so I tend to eat more. This ought to be interesting…

Check back soon to read Laura's updates on her progress as she controls her food portion sizes!
