What's in a name?

It always seems like this is the time of year for making lists: the best of this, the worst of that, what we will do better in the New Year, etc.

Dogster, the social network for dogs I wrote about in my very first entry on this blog, has published a list of the 100 most popular dog names, based on home pages on the Web site.

Top names for boys include Buddy, Max, Jake and Charlie. Top names for girls include Lucy, Daisy, Molly, and Bella. Bailey was number 5 on the boy's list and number 10 in the girl's list.

My boy dog's name, Dexter, appears somewhere near the middle of the list. Coral, my little girl pooch, apparently has a unique name: hers did not make the list at all. Of course, those are the names they had when we adopted them, so we get no credit for creativity of lack thereof.

How did you decide on your dog's name?

Our oldest cat is named Shade because she is black and I found her amongst the shadecloth used to shelter greenhouse plants from the sun. Our youngest cat is Gracie, named after her father whose name was Grayson and who she is the spitting image of. Our dog is Cali, named after the Mexico town from which she was adopted - Mexicali. We wanted to keep some of her heritage but still have a girlie name!

Alas, our beloved pooch's name, Bauer, is not on the list. No matter, as I don't fancy many of the more popular names. Bauer was named after the trademark line of hockey equipment (not Eddie Bauer, nor Jack Bauer).

What would be interesting to see on the list, also, would be an additional item listing the breed that had the most occurrences of the name. I would expect more of the Maximus, Sam(p)son, Diesel, and Zeus to be Dobermans or Rotties. Winston, Brutus, Bruno are common American Bulldog names.

My puppy was named Holly because she was born in December. My oldest kitty was a stray found by a wonderful woman who took her to the vet to have her shots, etc. and I was lucky enough to be there at the time. I left with the kitty and named her Lilly. My other kitty turned up on my porch, another stray lost and without a home...she was my little Angel.therefore I had to name her Angel. They are all precious to me.

My oldest Jack Russell-male-Bailey was named after Mr. Bailey from the movie "It's a Wonderful Life." My husband agreed to getting a puppy after seeing this movie-so it was only appropriate. My newest Jack, is named Sophie. She is 4 months old and quite a little character. Named Sophie only because it was different! And as I tell my husband, to honor his Polish ancestry.
