Thats what happens when you stop teaching courses like Mammalogy. No one knows what an opossum is in So Cal where this was posted. Hey VA, I just may have taught the last one in this state.

What's this "opossum" critter? Is that anything like a "poss-um"? ;)

My wife actually saw one behind the house a week ago. Though it was a rat at first, then she got a bit closer and saw the coloration. Of course it hissed, and she jumped a bit. Combined with our fox (a regular visitor), we have our own exotic zoo here in western Fairfax. (And Baxter, the neighbor's cat...)
