Feline fun

Homemade toys for cats are simple enough, but I think this guy has gone over the simple edge….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adXTF5wPft4

Many of my grandmother’s cats liked to play fetch and all my life I remember her having her homemade cat toys around the house. All they consisted of was a knee high stocking, rolled up and tied off with a piece of string to make a little ball. She wore knee highs all the time and when one would get a run in it, she recycled way before it was the “green” thing to do. The cats loved it.

I don’t wear knee highs but I do grow my own catnip and I admittedly buy those refillable mouse shaped toys for the cats in my home. We’ve also been known to toss crumpled homework looseleaf paper into the air and watch the cats tear it apart (a real cat-ate-my-homework excuse, though we never let them actually eat the paper.) Those hard to find paper grocery bags have always been funhouses for my cats, for at least as long as we could stand the rustling and pouncing. Recently, with the changing of a pair of shoelaces, two of my cats created their own fun, with one dragging the lace down the hall and the other playfully chasing after it.

Here’s a link to an article about other ideas for homemade cat toys: http://cats.lovetoknow.com/Homemade_Cat_Toys. Honestly, cats will play with just about anything and especially like stuff that makes a fun noise when they bat at it. At least the cats in my life have been this way. So, do you need to purchase mechanical mice or fancy feathered feline toys? You can, but just like a kid at gift opening time, the box might get more use than the intended object of fun.

My cats would take a rolled up ball of paper over a store-bought toy any day! I have some store toys and they do play with them from time to time but if they hear me roll up paper to toss in the trash they come running. Another favorite "toy" is the ring off of the milk jug.

Speaking of boxes, I brought some items home from work one day and put the box on the floor. My oldest cat took it over and she loves it. She defends it against her dog and cat sisters and I don't have the heart to get rid of it, therefore I now have a cardboard box as part of my decor!!

My cruel kids will actually shine a pen light on the wall. Poor Brandy. She'll go for it every time.

Kim: Two years ago my husband bought me a bathrobe for Christmas. It came in a square red box. I made the mistake of putting the empty box on the corner of my dresser, where it still sits today.

I can't get rid of it because my kitty, Thai, would never forgive me if I tossed it out. He loves to curl up in that box.

It's starting to fall apart now. So soon my decor will include a red box with duct tape.
