I’m a failed foster parent. I knew I would be. Last month I couldn’t get past an email from the Roanoke Valley SPCA in which they were looking for foster homes for a kitten and some puppies. All day, I kept going back to that email, looking at the eyes that were staring out at me. I told my boss, dear Nona, and she said, “Go get him.” Thanks Nona!

I called the SPCA, emailed them, and then just went on over, leaving work early to do it. I had already filled out the application and presented it along with my request for the grey Maine Coon kitten in lockup. They were only too happy to help me. I left with the kitten in a borrowed carrier, kitten food, a litter box and litter, and some toys for the little guy to play with. It was supposed to be a two week stay. I arrived home with the surprise companion and the kids shook their heads at me. Yes, I was spontaneous, but it was for a good cause.

Into the basement for some solitary time, not knowing if he was harboring an upper respiratory infection (which he was), the kitten instantly showed his true colors. He was a love. He was playful. He was already ours.

As the month of August wore on, “Charlie” was embraced by all of us. He is officially ours now, but really, I knew from that first photo I saw of him that he would be with us. The supplies have been returned to the SPCA, and Charlie is in his forever home. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a thank you note from Charlie himself, with the help of the SPCA. They’d taken his photo while he was back visiting for his neutering and created a note card with a personal message thanking me for fostering and adopting him. It was the perfect footnote to the most delightful adoption I’ve made. As for him being a Maine Coon…his little kitten self is already showing signs of expanding to what he may become. Glorious!

I've heard of this littly guy, but didn't know he was so cute!! How could you say no to that little face?

I've been told my cat, Brandy, is a Maine Coon. She gets wild sometimes but only in a lets-pretend sort of way.

SPCA fostering is a wonderful program. My best friend has fostered two puppies while trying to decide on a second dog for herself. The first puppy went to her friend, who has an 8-year-old son and a husband with ALS. That little boy just lit up with joy when he got that dog.

Soon, the SPCA will be ready to adopt out more than a dozen kittens that were rescued from a small hotel room which housed a total of 26 cats. Right now the vets are still giving check-ups. The SPCA has found foster homes for them, but they'd really like to see the kittens have permanent homes. Watch out, Heather!
