Opportunties to help local shelters
The Franklin County Humane Society announces its More Love Raffle, a fundraiser for its Adoption Center. Raffle tickets sell for $5 each or 5 for $20.
First prize will be a designer chaise chair – value $1,500, second place will be a designer wood desk – value $1,300 and third place a designer dog bed – $500 value.
Volunteers who help sell tickets can also win: First place – $50 Outback gift card, second place – $25 Barnes & Noble gift card, third place – $25 Starbucks gift card.
Tickets can be purchased at the adoption center on Rt. 220 South, 1841 Virgil Goode Highway. They can also be purchased by emailing: inglathc@aol.com or by sending a check to P.O. Box 973, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
All proceeds from the raffle will go to the Franklin County Humane Society Adoption Center which has provided care for nearly 3300 animals. The adoption center is open from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Roanoke Valley SPCA is participating in the “Qualifying Heat” of this year’s ASPCA $100K Challenge, competing for grants totaling $300,000 from the ASPCA, including a top prize of $100,000.
The 2011 ASPCA $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aiming to get more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before.
This first phase is the Qualifying Heat where registered shelters compete to accumulate the most online votes from their supporters. The 50 shelters with the most votes become the official contestants for the 2011 ASPCA $100K Challenge.
Supporters of the RVSPCA can help by voting online at www.votetosavelives.org, or by visiting www.rvspca.org and clicking on the Qualifying Heat button. You can vote every day until April 15.

Angels of Assisi is hosting an adoption and pet food drive on Saturday, April 9 at Rescue Dog at Towers Mall.
The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the lunch-counter-style, hot dog eatery located on the upper level, across from Wildflour Cafe.
The no-kill shelter is looking for donations of Purina pet food(dogs, cats, pups and kittens), cat litter, toys or other pet-related supplies.
Food other than Purina can be donated and will be passed on to needy families.
There will also be adoptable pets to meet and greet and if you have only temporary room at your inn, you can get information about fostering.
