Books and calendars…and cats…looking for homes
One of the missions here at the Wag is to make folks aware of all the awesome work done by professionals and an army of volunteers on behalf of pets in this area. This is a region filled with people with generous spirits who really want to help the most helpless — homeless cats, dogs, puppies and kittens.
F.E.R.A.L. is a great example of a network of volunteers on the singular mission of saving unwanted cats. You see these kitties in the crates along the right hand wall of the Valley View PetSmart, hoping to catch the eye of a kind-hearted soul who will make them a new member of the family.
What you don’t see is all the foster homes coordinated by Thelma Marienfeldt, who runs F.E.R.A.L. and has helped hundreds of stray and unwanted cats and kittens find good homes. I got an email last night that Marienfeldt is retiring soon, and her volunteers are hoping to place all the cats and kittens at the store and in foster care as soon as possible.
This is the sort of story I always wanted the blog and column to be about: spotlighting the people who help pets and raising awareness in this community of the need for homes, donations and for prevention via spaying and neutering.
There will be more to come on the story of Marienfeldt and her cats, but her organization is the inspiration for today’s giveaway:
What does the acronym F.E.R.A.L. stand for?
Post a correct answer and the winner will be chose tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
Jen, Beverly, Cindy and Jackie, our previous winners this week, no doubt know the answer, but I am sure they want other folks to have a chance to win.

A great organization! I look forward to more information about F.E.R.A.L. on the blog.

I adopted my second cat, Wally, from them on Valentine’s Day 2009! I went into Petsmart that Saturday hoping to adopt an orange tabby and sure enough little 6-month old Wally was there waiting for a home! It was a match made in heaven (though he can be a trouble-maker sometimes! But oh so darned cute!)
I just wanted to say that Thelma is an absolute lifesaver – literally. I had found a cat that was hit by a car and once he had proper vet care, Thelma was able to take him since I couldn’t keep him, and she found a good home for him. I’m very excited about your upcoming story on her. She’s just amazing, and I hate to see her retire, but God bless her, I’m sure she could use some rest!
I just wanted to let you know I got my book today – WOW was that fast!! I absolutely love the book. Thank you so very much!!
Got my book yesterday and already started reading-and learning! Thanks, Nona.
We went to see Thelma and wish her the best this afternoon. Unfortunately the publicity did little to help her adopt her remaining kitties. There are still nearly a dozen who could use a forever home, we have already adopted two and wish we could take them all. Those interested can still contact her at 427-1842. Happy New Year all, hopefully you will reach out for a little furry buddy, too.
