A glowing giveaway
As spring draws closer and winter fades, the sun is peeking up over the Blue Ridge Mountains a wee bit early, and settling a wee bit later each day.
But if you walk your dog regularly in the un-street-lighted suburbs like the where one I live in, you need some reflective gear until summer’s glow lasts for 13+ hours a day.
Dog-e-Glow products may have the answer for those of you who like to stroll with your pooch in the waning and waxing hours of the day.
The company sent me two free samples of their LED powered leashes, one for me to try (review to follow, I promise) and one to give away to a lucky reader.
This looks like a pretty cool product that would greatly enhance the safety of walkers at both ends of the leash. The one the company sent me is 6-foot, (the one in the middle of this photo — red with black and white striped hearts) and comes with two replacement batteries.
Besides the leads, Dog-e-Glow also sells collars in a fashion collection for the style conscious and a college collection for those with school spirit.
(Alas, Hokie fans, they have UVa but not Virginia Tech. Yet.)
I think these leads and collars are a great idea because my neighborhood is populated with folks who exercise their dogs at all hours and I worry that my aging eyes may not spot a wayward walker. And then there is just the fun factor. Who doesn’t like stuff that glows in the dark?
If you would like a chance to claim this light-up leash, write a comment about your favorite place to walk your dog and what your walking routine is like. One winner will be chosen at random from all the comments at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 29.

My favorite place to walk my dog, Pippin, is around my neighborhood streets. It gives me the chance to meet my newer neighbors or catch up with those that I have known for awhile. It also gives me the chance to socialize Pippin with new people and other dogs. I usually like to change up our route if possible by going different directions each time or on different streets. We’d love to sport around the neighborhood with one of the LED leads!
We have a great neighborhood for walking our dog, lots of tall mature trees and places to run. But we don’t have a lot of street lights so those later walks can be a little frightening. The culdesac behind us is pitch black at night too. I think the LED leads would be great for that last walk before bedtime and of course on Halloween!
We have a great big yard for our little Boston Terrier, but have to keep her leashed because she likes to try to chase away the deer that “own” it. This would be another great way to let them know we’re coming.
My favorite place to walk Chesney is the track at the Hollins Park off Hollins Rd. It’s actually a walking track around the soccer fields there, but lots of folks walk themselves and their dogs. Unfortunately, because it’s a decent ways back from the main road and surrounded by lots of trees, it’s pretty dark back there even with the lights they have around the track. One of these leads would be awesome to use around the track and would let other walkers with dogs know that we’re there (a problem since Chesney is a low-slung doxie).
These look absolutely wonderful! I’ve been following this company since my furry dogson, Tugg the Bull Terrier, started wearing their collar. You have heard of Tugg, haven’t you? He’s an amazing English Bull Terrier who as a puppy was left for dead on the side of a street in Ft. Worth TX. He appeared to have been burned over his whole body; it was hard to tell he was a puppy. Even the person who abandoned him realised that, as a sign marked “dog” was attached to him! He had such a severe case of demodex it was feared he wouldn’t live. Two very special animal control officers adopted him and saved his life. Tugg has proved to be a very special boy. Along with his pawrents, Blake and Kim Ovard, he has embarked in a campaign to help homeless pets and to prevent human bullying. In recognition of Tugg’s contributions the AKC recognised him by awarding the very prestigious ACE award at the National Dog Show in December. Tugg has a great Facebook page – you need to become a fan of Tugg!
So, I digressed. Sorry. I just take every opportunity to let folks know about Tugg. And since he is a very happy DogEGlow collar and leash wearer, I just had to share. Tugg has terrific fashion sense and style!
BB the Briard and I actually just WON a Stars & Stripes DogEGlow collar a couple of days ago! We hope someone really nice wins this necklace, I mean leash. Molly the Abandoned Cat thinks this is very nice for BB, as it will be a tribute for her human who just returned from his second tour in Iraq. Molly & BB have become very close during the months Philip was away. She no longer thinks BB really eats cats, but she always makes sure BB has a ready supply of snacks and kibble to ensure that BB won’t be tempted.
Good luck everyone!
My Sophie is a 60 pound apartment dwelling dog so 2-3 walks per day are a necessity. In the winter we often find ourselves out in the pre and post work darkness. Our favorite place to walk is the Virginia Tech campus because it is well lit and there is always so much action going on. She never knows what those crazy college students are going to do next and she loves it.
I love to walk my 3 greyhounds around my neighborhood, Old Southwest. We usually start out on Highland and walk through Highland Park, past the dog park, and then on to 5th street and back home.
A few times per month I will load them up in the SUV and we will head to Wasena and walk the Greenway down to Roanoke Memorial and turn around.
Ever since I started walking my dog in my neighborhood, I have had the chance to get to talk to my neighbors more! Some days I’ll see that someone’s large dog got loose and bring them back to their owner while walking my little rascal. My little Bichon, Ziva, loves to play with the Charlie the Westie and Muffin the Beagle that live down the road! Socialization for dog and owner!
My five year old daughter and I like to walk our Chihuahua Diablo on the wooded trail near our home. He is pretty nervous generally so when we get into nature he really calms down and enjoys all the sights, but mostly the SMELLS!!!! My little girl really loves to walk him herself and he really responds to her commands, and they have the best time on the trail all the way to the end where there is a dog park!!! Glad I packed the ball
I like to walk my dog around our small town, and we are at all the events that are dog friendly too. Many people know my dog and they love to see him sporting new bandanas or collars for the seasons. This leash would make sure we are seen when we are out in the evenings especially during movie and concert nights.
Our two dogs have the lighted collars. Although we have a fenced yard, sometimes the escape artists manage to–well–escape. It was bad enough in the daytime, but after dark, it was nearly impossible to find them. With the collars (that blink in three colors, by the way), it’s so much easier to see them for ‘recapture.’ The led lights are very bright and easy to see from a distance. I like watching them play in the yard in the dark and watch the lines of light playing tag across the lawn.
Me & Marley,(named after Bob Marley”) have a most magnifigant. trail to walk in all Seasons. Marley always. Goes ahead to ck. Out the hollow tree stumps, & all the pleasant doggiest smells. I pace myself, so as not to miss what I refer. To as “The weeping cliffs”; In Winter they become magnificant ice sculpters to admire. In Spring, they are rushing from a country spring water, that Marley loves to drink from. Wildflowers everywhere, and The Jackson flowing on the right. We live 25 mins,. From “HOMESTEAD” & A VERY SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE “FALLING SPRIINGS’ FALLS ..We always take Marley on our ventures. & sometimes meet people staying at the Hotel. It does take wealth to stay there, but Marley. & I know that God provides us thus wealth, in his Creation of Free Joy, love, laughter & petslike Marley. Did I mention that, Marley is “Jet Black” & only. A cross formation of white on his chest. So Giveaway led leash would be a great help for us, as I have extreme nearsightedness, that inhibited my keeping up with Marley at night.!!!!! We sure could use it. He weighs in at 92 lbs. Last ck. Are they big enough for him??
I’ve always considered myself a cat person. My husband and I have been on the staff of two rescue cats for several years now. Imagine my surprise when a few months ago he came home with the grungiest dog I had ever seen! This poor creature had been living around a gas station in the absolute middle of nowhere. My husband asked the cashier about her and was told no one knew where the dog had come from, but it had been hanging around for nearly a year because customers would feed it junk food. She said if he could give her a better home, he could take her. Well long story short, he came home with her. We had no intention of keeping her and the cats were not thrilled, but after the first week, we realized she is such a sweetheart that there was no way we could give her up. The cats have even learned to tolerate her. So, as unprepared as we were to be dog people, we’ve had to make some adjustments. We usually walk her around our neighborhood. My husband took her on the Read Mountain Trail not too long ago and I plan to get her out to a lot of the dog friendly events this summer. The more walking we do, the more her junk food pounds are melting away. She’s usually really good on the leash unless she picks up the scent of another animal. And she’s very friendly so we always have to stop and greet any neighbors that we see.
